Science Communication and Policy Symposium

The Program concludes with a three-day symposium where fellows have an opportunity to share lessons learned with each other, meet with policymakers, and participate in networking events.

Prior to the symposium, fellows are required to develop a portfolio of policy products, including an op-ed, pitch presentation, policy brief, and one-pager that highlight the public and policy implications of their scientific research. At the event, participants present these outputs, which are also published in a collection and circulated to policy leaders.

The 2023 symposium is hosted by OIST and begins with a tour of the OIST campus, followed by a meeting amongst the US and Japan fellows. Each fellow from the US is partnered with a fellow from Japan, to foster the development of an international network. The second day of the symposium includes public presentations of policy pitches by the fellows, followed by talks from the distinguished guest speakers. The last day of the symposium includes a look ahead, involving a discussion led by the fellows, teaching leads, and invited guests about future plans for the program.
