When filling out the application, please make sure that information you provide on your application is accurate, correct, and complete and that you are able to commit to meeting all of the requirements of the program listed below.

Please check the following eligibility criteria before submitting your application. Applicants must: 

  • Be an early-career scientist based in Japan or the U.S. (Early-career is defined as an advanced Ph.D. student or postdoc within 10 years of having completed their Ph.D.).
  • Study or research a topic related to global issues of climate change, energy, health/biotechnology, transportation, artificial intelligence, engineering, and/or quantum computing. 
  • Demonstrate sufficient proficiency in English to actively participate in the program and complete the writing assignments. Please note that the training sessions will be conducted in English without interpretation. 
  • Demonstrate commitment to the program’s aims and a desire to contribute as members of a long-term network.

If selected, fellows are expected to:

  • Attend all training sessions and policy roundtables in this program.
  • Attend a three-day symposium in either Tokyo or Washington, DC.
  • Develop a portfolio of policy products, including a brief, an op-ed, a pitch presentation, and one-pager highlighting an aspect of their scientific research that has public and policy implications. These products will be published in a collection and circulated to policy leaders. 

To participate in the program, candidates must:

  • Submit the application form. 
  • Submit a short video in preparation for the modules run by The Wilbury Theatre Group, which are designed to help participants increase their confidence, authenticity, and enthusiasm when speaking publicly. Instructions for the video are included in the Jotform application form.

The Program will cover the following expenses for participants:

  • Airfare for participants traveling overseas to attend the symposium tentatively scheduled for February. 
  • Domestic transportation for participants to attend the symposium. 
  • Participants’ accommodations and meals during the three-day symposium.

Fellows are responsible for covering any other expenses incurred as a result of participating in the program.
